Spring Fishing Sand Hollow Report

Spring Fishing Sand Hollow was awesome with a total of 35 bass caught between me and my dad. They were all solid fatties, which made for even better times. We found 4 different patterns that seemed to produce bass throughout the course of the day. Here’s what transpired from when we arrived on the lake to when we left.

We started off fishing the rip rap along the dam. On literally my first cast with with a drop shot rig, my line went tight and I set the hook on a solid 3 pounder. He was a lot of fun. We found the majority of our fish in the morning super shallow cruising the banks of the rip rap. We picked off several more with senko’s. The day definitely started off with some stoke juice flowing. Here’s the picture of the first chunk on the drop shot.

First bass on my first cast on a drop shot rig. Super dope.

We had to head in for a couple hours because a downpour of rain started hammering us, so we grabbed some lunch. After lunch, we went shallow looking for more like we saw along the dams. The water level was really high, so there was a lot of freshly flooded brush and trees. We spooked a bass off a tree, so we grabbed our flipping rods and started going to work. We wound up slamming about a half dozen bass sitting in the fresh flooded cover. There is nothing funner than pitching your bait up shallow in thick cover and hauling out bass. It was a blast. Here’s one of the good one’s my dad caught pitching into the shallow cover.

We ran out of water with cover to flip because of the small size of the lake, so we decided to go try some deep water stuff. We moved out on some flats, and I dragged along a carolina rig with no success. Next, we headed to the red rock ledges, and dragged a jig along the bottom. It wound up paying off. We caught several bass on a jig. It was a ton of fun. Here’s a picture of one of the good ones caught on the jig before we called it a day. I Love finding the jig bite going. I caught these bass on a different jig than what I normally use which gets me super cranked. It is so rad to find new baits that work well. Grab one of them mentioned below for yourself to try. I was pleasantly surprised by how well it worked on Sand Hollow.

The fish counter on the boat read 35 bass when we called it for the day. I felt the weather definitely played to our advantage because it kept a lot of people off the lake. I’ll take calm water and a little rain any day of the week over wind and sunshine. Make sure to check out the video below of some of this action on film, subscribe to view the map of the spots we fished, and then check out the bait bag of what we used to crush them. Hopefully, you can make it out and put some of these techniques to work for you to “Krak” some bass.

Spring Fishing Sand Hollow Baits and Techniques

Here are the 3 techniques and the baits we used to catch bass in the spring on Sand Hollow. Hopefully, you can use these methods to catch a few bass out here yourself.

Weightless Wacky Rig

The 5″ Yamamoto Senko worked really well weightless on a wacky rig. Several bass were up cruising shallow, and this bait helped us pick them off. The key was to use light line, and make ridiculously long casts. Almost every bite came at the end of the cast. In the clear water of Sand Hollow it’s especially important to get the bait way out there. A good spinning rod and reel set up was essential for making those bomber casts. Once you had the bait out there just let it fall down on a slack line. Once the senko hit’s the bottom pull it a little bit, and repeat the fall on the slack line. You had to watch the line close, because the bites were subtle.

Flipping & Pitching

The Keitech Crazy Flapper set up on a Strike King Jointed Structure Head was perfect for flipping into the flooded cover. The bass seemed to really dig this set up. Plus, the structure head goes through brush and cover better than a lot of other jig heads I’ve fished. The key to catching the bass was to make long pitches. Plus, you had to get your bait right in the middle of the brush you were flipping into. Getting your bait right into the thick of the main trunks of the brush and trees made a big difference in getting bites. In addition, adding  a couple shakes of the rod tip to get the bait dancing enticed a few strikes as well.

Jigging Deep

Towards the end of the day the Keitech Casting Jig with the Keitech Crazy Flapper for a trailer really produced some great bites. Bombing it out along the rock ledges, and very slowly dragging it along the bottom was when the bites happened. The rubber skirt of this jig along with the crazy flapper created some of the best action for imitating a craw-fish I’ve ever encountered. This set up was dope.
