How to Fish Deps Buzzjet – Secret Japanese Wake Bait

Depz BuzzJet Bass Fishing

The Deps Buzzjet lure will get you to catch more fish when you know how to use it right, but this lure can be hard to come by. This is an original Japanese wakebait. Tackle shops often run out because it is a fish catching machine. Reading the tips in this post, you’ll see how well the Buzzjet lure can work. Here are details of how to fish the Deps Buzzjet and get to kraken more bass.

Fishing the Deps Buzzjet

The Deps Buzzjet is the perfect wakebait topwater for fishing up big bass from deep haunts in the summer. In a nutshell the Buzzjet is a chuck and wind topwater lure with a unique prop splashing design. The Deps Buzzjet has a natural profile with a wide wobble lip, so you can create an erratic presentation. In addition, the Deps Buzzjet is very heavy, so you can easily cast it far to get those large and smallmouth bass.

Even though the design and idea of this bait makes a ton of sense, it’s got some unique quirks. After experimenting with the Buzzjet over several years, I’ve learned a lot of hints that have helped me slay big ones. The right fishing equipment, retrieving the bait properly, and knowing when to use the Buzzjet will make a difference for you. Let’s dive into how to fish a Buzzjet, so you can put more bass in your boat.

The Deps Buzzjet is a staple in my bass fishing topwater arsenal. It straight catches fish.

Buzzjet Best Fishing Equipment

The right equipment will help you have better success when fishing the Deps Buzzjet. I have found this lure works best with a medium heavy action rod with a fast tip. A medium heavy action rod will give you better control to work the Buzzjet properly because it’s so heavy. Add on a high-speed ratio reel to make an even bigger difference for quickly picking up line on your retrieve. Anything over a 7:1:1 gear ratio will do the trick. Lastly, make sure you have a long rod, over 7 feet, so you can bomb that baby out and get more leverage on your hook sets. A good rod and reel combination will make for more catches with the Deps Buzzjet.

In addition to using the medium heavy action rod, the type of line you use will make a big difference when fishing the Deps Buzzjet. I have found more success with a braid to monofilament leader set up, instead of the traditional straight fluorocarbon or straight braided line. Why? Because the Buzzjet is a bait that shines best when it sits on topwater. With straight fluorocarbon, your line will sink and make the bait dive under the water. Yet, the braid by itself is too visible and bass shy away from it in clear water. The Mono-filament line is important because it floats, which will give you the best action out of the lure. So, if you want the Buzzjet to work for you, use a braid to mono-filament line solution with a double uni knot to gently sit on your topwater.

How to Retrieve Your Lure

How you fish the Deps Buzzjet depends on how the bass are responding. This bait performs best with a slow, steady wind so it wobbles back and forth on the top of the water. One of the cool features of the Deps Buzzjet is prop buzzing action. I have found the best way to retrieve a Shower Blows goes like this: Cast the lure out and let it pause on the topwater until the ripples disappear. Then slowly start winding with your medium heavy action rod tip up–observe what the bait is doing to make sure it is walking on the surface. Deps buzz jet action and characteristics
The Deps Buzzjet has a unique lip to allow for waking on the topwater. Plus, it gives a loud “pop” to create a disturbance to draw up big bites from bass.

When to Use the Deps Buzzjet

Knowing when to use the Deps Buzzjet will help you put more fish in the boat. Seasonally, this bait will work best late spring through early fall. I find the erratic topwater bait tends to draw strikes when bass are more aggressive in the warmer water temperatures. The Buzzjet is ideal for when you encounter bass in shallow or clear water. The big profile and fast walking action of the lure will help you cover water faster, and help you find where fish are holding on your lake.

The Buzzjet also works well in high fishing pressure situations. It’s not a bait the bass see a lot. It has a real, unusual appeal to those bass, drawing them out of the deeper haunts. It’s a great imitation of a feeding baby bass or a perch often found flitting around at the top of the water column. One of the best colors in clear water is bluegill. This color will straight up will get you chomped!

Deps Buzzjet Additional Tips

As mentioned earlier, the Deps Buzzjet can be hard to find in tackle shops. I’ve only been able to find the baits online, and even those tend to run out fast. Ebay, Amazon, and Tackle Warehouse are good places to start if you want to try one of these baits out. Another note is that these lures have trebles on the back and can easily get dulled up. Especially when you are catching a lot of fish (which you totally will with this bait and using these techniques). It’s always a good idea to have a hook sharpener. Keep your hooks sharp to be sure you keep you sticking fish all day.
