How to Fish a Senko Wacky Rig for Bass Topwater Style

A wacky rig senko is the first thing any novice bass fisherman should start off with, but have you ever fished one on top of the water? A wacky rig senko catches fish no matter what, and by accident I came across this new way of fishing a senko topwater style. I’m naming this technique the “Shakin Senks” because I’ve never seen it before. I saw something similar on a japanese bass fishing YouTube channel, but not quite identical. I’m quite surprised at the results “shaking senks” has to draw strikes on top. Outlined below is everything you need to get set up wacky senko fishing on top, and how this “shaking senks” works.

The Setup

Basically all you need is the same stuff you would normally use for fishing a senko wacky rig. First, a good spinning rod and reel set up with a high extra fast tip. A taller 7″ rod will help you keep the bait on top of the water easier, and a fast tip will help you get the senko shaking easily.

Secondly, The smaller senko’s work best for this technique. Use a 3″ or 4″ senko in your favorite color. Also, the roboworm ned worms work well too. The ned worms don’t sink as fast, so you can keep them on the surface better. A size 1 longer shank stinger hook seems to keep the bait up easier too, and provides a better hook up ratio. Lastly, put on a wacky ring in the center of the bait, so you don’t lose as many senkos. See the wacky senko diagram below.

Senko Topwater Technique Explained

I discovered this topwater senko trick on accident by shaking a senko up over some cover, and a bass came up twice to eat it! After, experimenting some more, here’s a few thoughts on why this works, and how to use a wacky senko on top. When you shake a senko on the top the ripples it creates in the water mimic a dying bug or bait fish almost exactly. This is why it draws strikes on top. Plus, you get the added bonus of letting the bait fall down deeper if you get a strike and miss the fish.

Shaking senkos on top is easy. Start with a good cast out to where you want. Next, start reeling to get your bait up to the surface. Then start shaking your rod lightly while you keep reeling the senko on the surface. Make sure to check out the video below to see it in action. The key is to reel fast enough consistently to keep your bait on the surface, and then shake your rod tip to send out the vibration waves of stoke. Watch your bait close, because they’ll come up to eat it!

Here’s some video footage of some miscellaneous adventures experimenting with fishing a senko wacky rig on top. It will give you a good idea of how to use a senko in this unique way, and give you a better visual on how this technique works. Hopefully, you can see how “shaking senks” can work on a variety of places.

Additional Senko Wacky Rig Topwater Thoughts

Fishing a wacky rig senko on top is best in the warmer months. Late Spring through Early Fall is when the topwater bites are at their best, and this is definitely a topwater tactic. Another key thing to remember with a wacky rig senko on top is make sure your hook is dead center in the bait. If you hook the senko on one side more than another, the bait will retrieve back to you at an angle. This technique works well to keep your bait up out of cover, and draw bass out of brush or grass. It’s definitely a new look most bass haven’t seen yet. So please don’t share this post with anyone 🙂

  1. I just krakened a five pounder this evening before I went to this video to find out if anyone else had tried top water wacky rigging. I caught it right before it started getting dark above a culvert. He came out of no where and just anialated the yum dinger. Craziest idea I’ve thought of in a long time. Personally, I don’t see how something rigged so stupidly can catch fish. But they love the wacky rig.
