Best Upper Sand Cove Reservoir Baits

With only a couple hours on the water I wasn’t able to try a lot of different baits. Yet, I came across two set ups which caught all my fish. Here’s the details of those baits, and how to use them for best success on Upper Sand Cove Reservoir.

Wheeler Buzzbait w/ Keitech Noisy Flapper

The finesse Jacob Wheeler Buzzbait paired with a Keitech Watermelon Noisy Flapper caught more bass than anything else I tried on this trip. This bait works well on a Medium Heavy Extra Fast Action Bait Casting Rod with a High Speed Bait Casting Reel. I use braided line on my set up to help keep the bait up on top of the water easier. The key to the buzzbait was to cast it out, and reel it along just slow enough to keep the blades turning on top of the water. The Noisy Flapper trailer really helps to get the bait rising up out of the water, so you don’t have to retrieve it as fast as other buzzbaits.

Daiwa Neko Fat

The Daiwa Neko Fat worm in green pumpkin didn’t catch the most fish, but it caught the biggest fish! I rigged this bait up neko style with a 1/16 oz nail weight, and a size 1 gamakatsu stinger hook. This hook seems to work better on a neko rig for hook up ratio’s. Plus, the light nail weight was perfect for this shallow pond to keep the bait from getting hung up to much in the grass. The key to fishing a neko rig is to let the bait fall to the bottom, and then on a semi slack line shake the bait along. Check out the video below to see how to work this bait, and the big fish this thing caught.
