The 5 Best Neko Rig Baits
The Neko Rig is a fish catching machine if you know what baits to use for it. I struggled for a while figuring out the best baits, tackle, and gear to use for a neko rig. Hopefully, you can start off right utilizing my discoveries with these 5 best Neko Rig baits to get you “Kraken” bass! Included in this post is a video of all 5 of the best neko rig baits in one morning of fishing to see them better in action. Plus, more details about these baits and why they work so well on a neko rig.
The Neko Rig has become a main staple for me, and a solid set up to have tied on. It works well throughout the year. Check out my original post on neko rigging a few years ago, if you don’t know much about it; Neko Rigging. It also has some good tips to help you when fishing a neko rig. Enjoy this post!
Daiwa Neko Fat
The Daiwa Neko Fat by Yammamoto Baits is an incredible bait for Neko Rigging. What makes the Daiwa Fat one of the best Neko Rig worms is because of it’s bulk, weight, and life like action. This Neko Rig bait is just a bit bulkier than most Neko worms, which makes it appeal to some of the bigger bass in your body of water. It also is a little heavier, so you can get some massive casts from it. You could even throw the Neko Fat on a bait casting rod and reel set up potentially. Lastly, the little bulb on the tail creates a unique wobbling action as you pull it forward to entice those bass to bite.
Megabass Dot Crawler
Another one of the best Neko Rig baits is the Megabass Dot Crawler. It has a nice butt wobble action too set it apart from the other Neko Rig worms on the market. The Dot Crawler also carries some weight for further casts to get more bites from those fish in clear water. The Dot Crawler works well because it stands out from other worms the bass in your home waters may have become accustomed to seeing. The only downside to this worm is it is really soft, so you end up going through a few of them. Still though the Megabass Dot Crawler has some serious fish catching ability.
Zoom Trick Worm
The Orginal Zoom Trick Worm is a classic staple for fishing with a Neko Rig. It’s one of the best Neko Rig baits because it’s finesse profile translates into more bites from wary bass. Another neat thing with the zoom trick worm is you can create a different action from the bait depending on where you put the hook on your worm. Placing the hook on the outside of the round portion of the worm produces more of a wobbling motion, as you pull it along the bottom. If you place the hook on the flat side of the worm, and pull it along you will get a more tight shaking action. Sometimes one rigging will work better than another. The Zoom Trick Worm is by far the cheapest option as well for Neko rigging, and you won’t be disappointed in what you catch.
Biwaaa Ultra Hog
The Biwaa Ultra Hog is one of the best Neko Rig baits because of it’s unique style. Neko rigging a craw style bait like the ultra hog can generate a lot of strikes. Especially, if the bass in your lake feed a lot on crayfish. The flashy tentacles and flappers on the Biwaa Ultra Hog really pulsate well when the bait hops along on a Neko set up. This is a small bait with a small profile, so smaller tungsten nail weights work better on the Biwaa Ultra Hog. Also, finesse spinning gear is a must if you want to get any type of distance with your casts for this set up.
Best Neko Rig Fishing Set Up
It’s important to get set up properly for fishing a Neko Rig if you hope to do it effectively. After some experimentation on various set ups, an all-around spinning rod and reel set up seems to get the job done the best for a Neko Rig. Use a 7 foot medium or medium heavy spinning rod with a decent size 30 spinning reel with your Neko Rig. Spool your reel up with 10 lbs. braided line, then add about 15 feet of 8 lbs. fluorocarbon leader. This line set up will help with sensitivity, so you can tell what your Neko Rig is doing. You will be able to detect more strikes.
Terminal tackle for setting up your best Neko Rig baits is vital as well. You will get more hook up’s with a little longer shank hook. A good hook for the Neko Rig is the size 1 gamakatsu stinger finesse hook. This hook will get the job done. Also, you need some wacky o-ring’s for your baits. Otherwise, you will lose a lot of them. Lastly, use either a 1/16 oz or 1/8 oz nail weight to insert into the head of your best Neko Rig baits. The 1/16 oz works well when fishing shallower down to 15 feet. Use the 1/8 oz nail weight if you are fishing 15 feet or deeper to help you get down to the bottom a little quicker.
