Sand Hollow Bass Fishing – May Escapades 76 Fish!

My brother, Casey Spilker, and I took off for sunny St. George May 17, 2013. We had one of the best days ever Sand Hollow bass fishing. We caught them on every bait imaginable. The weather was constantly changing, so we had to adjust accordingly. We had a fish counter in the boat, and when all was said and done we caught 76 fish. One was over 5 lbs, and at least 12 which were about 3 lbs. It was a solid day of fishing. Here is an hour by hour run down of what we used, and a map of the places we fished to help you when Sand Hollow bass fishing.

Sand Hollow Bass Fishing Early Morning 6 – 8 am:

We hit the water at 6am when Sand Hollow opened, and went over to a flat sand cove across the lake. We decided to throw top-waters because of how calm the water was. My dad caught two on a Yozuri popper, and I caught my first Largemouth on a walk the dog spook style bait. It was so awesome to watch those bass come up and eat baits on the surface. I was super stoked on how well it worked.

The top-water bite died off quickly, and so I started throwing a Baby Bass Zoom Fluke weightless with a 3/0 hook over the shallow cover. On my second cast I caught a small fish, and then my very next cast I caught a nice chunky bass. The top picture featured at the head of this post is the dude I caught on the fluke. What a sweet Largemouth Bass!

While I was throwing the fluke, my brother and dad started throwing square bill shallow diving crankbaits over the shallow brush piles. We were sitting in about 7 – 10 ft and the fish seemed to be just stacked in the brush. Almost every cast my brother and dad caught a fish on these shallow crankbaits. Anything with chartreuse seemed to be the ticket.

Since my brother and dad were doing so well, and we were fishing a little too fast for my fluke, I tied on a white & yellow spinner bait. The spinnerbait started crushing them just as good as the crankbaits. The key to getting hit was swimming it up and around the brush to get strikes. Then when they hit, they hit hard! I wound up catching the biggest fish of the day on the spinner bait. He was a toad! Here is in all his glory!

Sand Hollow Bass Fishing @ Mid Morning 9 am – 11 am

After such a solid run in the morning, eventually the fish kind of slowed off in the cove we were fishing. Plus, the wind picked up. We decided to move to the underwater bass island, and drift across those flats. Here is what transpired while drifting across the island flats.

My dad threw a smallie beaver, my brother threw a green pumpkin chartreuse football jig, and I put on my jika rig with the Havoc Pit Boss Summer Crawdad. We all caught fish. My brother missed a bunch on his football jig. My dad crushed 3 or 4 on the beaver, and then I crunched me another toad that went about 4lbs. It was a good move to hit the island.

Once we finished drifting over the under water island, we headed over to the dyke. We were counting our fish and hit about 32 before heading over to the dyke. Our goal was to hit 40 by lunch. We were super close! We started drifting along the dyke, and we started picking up fish instantly. Caught a few on crankbaits, and I caught a couple on a spinner bait.

After I got done throwing the spinner bait, I asked my brother if I could use his pole with the green pumpkin chartreuse football jig. He said, “go ahead.” I started flipping the bait up along the dyke, and busted one. Then a little way further down the dyke I pitched the jig right next to a black pipe in about 2 feet of water, and after one twitch I got ripped. I set the hook and a big ole 6 pound donkey bass came jumping out of the water. On the second jump with his mouth wide open, out popped my bait. I was sick. Another toad would’ve been mine for bragging. I turned around and caught another 3 pound fish on the bait, and needless to say my brother took his pole and bait back. We wound up hitting 42 bass before lunch.

Sand Hollow Bass Fishing Afternoon 12 – 2 pm

After lunch, we went back at it again. We hit up the rock island next to the boat ramp, and my brother wound up catching most of the fish. He caught them all on the football jig. The football jig worked best along those step ledges. My brother would just let it slide down the face of them, and he got crushed.

Sand Hollow Bass Fishing Late Afternoon 2 – 5 pm

We wound up dropping my brother off at the boat ramp because he had to get to a wedding, and me and my dad stayed out and fished along the damn and along the east shore. I pulled out a drop shot rig and caught a couple, and my dad pulled out his smallie beaver and crushed a few more.

We ended up back out on bass island trying to catch another toad. The wind was howling, so I had the trolling motor on high trying to keep us in position. I caught another 6 bass on my Jika rig, and my dad caught another 6 on his Smallie Beaver. It was a windy afternoon, but we made the most of it and crushed us another 12.
