Here are my escapades of an awesome time on Sand Hollow shore fishing. There were several fish caught, and some new techniques discovered that helped me catch some bass. Hopefully, you can take away some things to help you when fishing from the bank on Sand Hollow. Included in this post is a map of the spots fished, the baits that worked, and a small clip of video footage. Enjoy this fishing report to get your stoke juices flowing.
I had a blast fishing from the banks on Sand Hollow Reservoir. Fishing from shore can be a productive way to catch bass. There are many things I learned on this trip that hopefully can help you in your bass fishing endeavors. All of these tips and tricks are detailed out here in this post. Make sure you read to the end to get all the juicy morsels of stoke. Plus, don’t forget to check out the video to give a you a little more taste of what I was doing to catch bass on this trip.

My excursion of fishing from the banks on Sand Hollow transpired on Thursday, October 13th from 2:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Sunset was at 7 pm, so I did a little bit of night fishing as well. Here is generally what conditions were like for me on this trip.
Bright, Sunny Skies, Air Temperature high around 80 degrees.
0-5 mph. Flat calm with an occasional breeze.
Around 69 degrees.
Crystal Clear, Visibility around 12 feet.

Here are the banks, and where I fished to catch fish along the shore’s of Sand Hollow on this trip.

While shore fishing on this trip there were several baits that seemed to work. Here were the best baits, and how to use them for catching bass on Sand Hollow from the bank.
The biggest bass of the trip sucked down the Megabass Dot Crawler. The dot crawler was rigged up texas style weightles with a 3/0 offset gamakatsu superline hook. The key to this set up was to fish it on a 7 foot medium heavy spinning rod and a spinning reel, with 15 lbs. braided line, and a long 8 lbs. test fluorocarbon leader. This set up enables you to cast the bait incredibly far, which is a huge advantage when your shore fishing. Once you cast the dot crawler out the other key was to let it fall all the way to the bottom, and slowly crawl it along. This how the majority of the bites came.
The 3″ green pumpkin senko caught a flurry of bass on this trip. I rigged the senko up on a 1/10 oz Z-man shroom head. This set up is ultra finesse and hung up a ton. The key to prevent hang ups was to make sure you were fishing through the grass, and not the rip rap rocks on the dam. When fishing this set up just cast it out, and let it fall to the bottom. I’d just hop it up, and let it fall back down to the bottom. This seemed to trigger the bass to bite.
A bluegill V&M Pulse swim jig produced one good fish, and few other bites. I added a keitech 3.8 fat impact swimbait as a trailer on the jig. With the swim jig I would cast it out, let it fall to the bottom, and slowly swim it back. Keeping the bait just above the bottom was key. It was a fun way to fish a little faster along the shore. I used a 7′ medium heavy baitcasting rod, and a Lew’s baitcasting reel for the swim jig on 10 lbs flourocarbon line.
At night the 4.8 Keitech Sexy impact in green pumpkin
was a beast mode bait for me. This bait fished on a Carolina rig with a 1/4 oz tungsten weight, glass bead, 1/0 offset gamakatsu worm hook, and 12″ of 10 lbs fluorocarbon leader was the dinner bell ringer at night. Keeping this set up down deep, and crawling it along the bottom was what worked.
It was warm, bright, and flat calm when I arrived at the lake for my evening of shore fishing. Knowing the majority of the bass stay deep this time of year, the north dam seemed like a solid spot to head to try and catch some deep water bass. The problem with fishing along the chunk rock along the shore is you can hang up a lot of baits. A solid fix is to fish a weightless texas rig, and patiently wait for it too fall to the bottom. This is exactly what I did, and hooked up on my second cast with a solid bass. Here’s a picture of the stud. He proved to be the biggest bass of the day.
The weightless texas rig was getting a little boring, so I thought I’d try to spice things up a bit. I started throwing a swim jig out deep and swimming it back up the rocks. I wound up catching a couple this way as well, until I hung up a few of my jigs. Here’s one on the swim jig.
Interestingly, while I was fishing along a bunch of snorkelers spear fishing were cruising along the same bank I was fishing. One of them had several bass strapped to his back. Pretty interesting witnessing. Here’s a picture of the guy with all the bass he harvested.
I had a hard time catching anything after these guys blazed the banks up, so I switched to an ultra finesse Z-man shroom head with a small finesse worm. It proved to be successful in catching me 3 more bass. This set up hung up a lot in the rocks, but out in the grass it proved to get some bites. Nothing super big, but it was fun to throw. Once, the sun set I was starving, so I headed back to the truck to fuel up and head out again for some night fishing. It was a full moon, so conditions were perfect. The full moon made it so you could see enough for walking, and casting. I used a carolina rig and fished out deep to see If I could call a couple out. It proved to be epic, and I popped 4 in an hour before I called it a night.
Shore fishing Sand Hollow was good to me. The night ended with a total of about a dozen bass caught. My biggest takeaway from the night is don’t be afraid to switch things up if things aren’t working out. Sometimes you might be catching a few, but you never know if there is something that may work better. I fish every small pond in Washington County and at Sand Hallow. I read every blog that comes out and I am impressed. I do very well bass fishing because I follow your blog on the proper techniques and equipment.

You should have called the game warden about the spearfishing. According to the 2016 Utah Fishing Guide, Sand Hollow isn’t a legal water for spearfishing.
